I’ve been buying air purifiers for close to 35 years now. It all started because of asthma and allergy problems in my youth. Over those years I’ve owned over 72 brands, including negative ion purifiers, hepa air purifiers, Ozone air purifiers, Oreck, and water based air purifiers. Here’s some advice on air purifiers, and some buying tips for saving money:

New Air Purifier Technology For Allergy Relief

To be honest – air purifier technology hasn’t changed much in the last 30 years. The only new development is some new technology coming out of Japan which can detect pollen, odor, and dust. The benefit – the air purifier can adjust according to the air in the room, and you save electricity while getting the best air possible.

Ion, Hepa, or Ozone?

Because of the low cost of production in China you can now find air purifiers with 3,5, even 8 or nine technologies in one unit and yet at the cost of most infomercial units.

Ion – Most infomercial models are strictly negative ion. Negative ions attract many airborne particles (which are positively charged. These air purifiers include the ones with “washable filters” (you’re basically washing the plates that are charged). Negative ion is a way to “purify” the air, but is not known to do a good job of “cleaning” the air.

Hepa – Hepa is a cloth-like filter which is effective for pollen, dust, and other airborne particles. (Think of the filter for your furnace, or the air filter in your car and you’ll get the picture). Most manufacturers do not include HEPA filters (I’ve yet to see an infomercial with Hepa) because of the cost involved. Yet Hepa is still the most effective against pollen, dust and also removes alot of pollution.

Ozone – Very effective for odors of any kind, mold and mildew – ozone is natures way of cleaning the air when used at safe levels. Sharper Image and their ionic Breeze had problems with Consumer Reports who reported unsafe levels being produced by their purifiers. Some manufacturers now have on/off ozone – ideal for occasional use of ozone for hard smells, mold, and to “treat a room”.

5 Buying Tips For Getting A Better Air Purifiers At A Discount

With many manufacturers on the market (mostly all are now coming out of China) heavy competition has made it a buyers market. Infomercial models are largely overpriced to cover the cost of advertising. Here are several tips for both buying at a Discount online and making sure you have a good value:

1) Determine the technology you want (I suggest multi-stage purifiers with 5-9 technologies)
2) Search online comparing technology, size of room, and prices at sites like http://www.aliveair.com or search Google
3) With reduced costs coming out of China, there is absolutely no reason to pay over $400 for an air purifier – no matter how good it sounds or how big your room
4) Include HEPA, it’s the best at cleaning the air – even though you have to replace the filters it simply works best
5) Check that the replacement filters are affordable (under $35 is reasonable) before buying any purifier.
6) When in doubt check eBay – if you see a lot of them for sale (like the oreck XL) you know there is a problem. Also search the model with the word “complaints” for forums and problems.
